Edward Campbell-Rowntree is a musician and academic originally from the north-east of England. He is currently based at Girton College, Cambridge, where he is completing his PhD in musicology under the supervision of Professor Bettina Varwig. His research, funded by the Vice-Chancellor’s & Rosalie Crawford Girton PhD Studentship, explores the relationship between music and death in seventeenth-century France, and has been recognised by the Irene Alm Memorial Prize, awarded by the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music (SSCM).

As a harpsichordist, Edward is a founding member of Les Acolytes, a trio ensemble which focuses primarily on French baroque repertoire. They recently took part in the New Generation Baroque Ensemble Development Day, and have been selected as Brighton Early Music Festival Emerging Artists (2026-27).

He is also a collaborative pianist, working most regularly with singers. He was a first prize winner in the inaugural Williams-Howard Memorial Competition (2022), a Leeds Lieder Young Artist (2023), and a member of the Cambridge Lieder Scheme (2024). He also took part in the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition (2024) alongside soprano Georgie Malcolm.

Edward holds degrees from King’s College London, the University of Oxford, and the Royal Northern College of Music. He is passionate about teaching, and currently works as a teacher of piano and music theory at the Saffron Centre for Young Musicians in Essex.
